STORY

Iu-Mien Friendship Baptist Church (IMFBC) is a growing intergenerational, multicultural, and bilingual church. IMFBC wants to improve its online presence to increase its membership participation and promote its mission.

The organization’s old website was outdated, missing content, and not user-friendly.

I revamped the entire visual design of the site, reorganized the sitemap, designed a visitor-friendly homepage, and an easy way for members to find out about new events. The new website is now streamlined, user-friendly with mobile optimization.

Solution Overview

A HOMEPAGE CATERED TO THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Through user research, I found that most visitors wanted to know more about the church, the groups available and the times of the service. I emphasized those key points by adding a double CTA on the hero image and the service times right under.

To bolster CX efforts of the church, I added a section of “What to Expect” and highlighted the cafe service as it made the organization stand out from others.

All pages are optimized for responsive design too.

EVENTS PAGE TO INCREASE COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Through user interviews, I found that most members wanted to use the website to find out about the events the church hosts.

I created a list view and also added a calendar. I decided to sacrifice the calendar design and opt for a Google Calendar implementation so that the leaders could easily add events without having to go into the web builder and visitors and members could see live updates of the events.

The Results

The new website has seen a 100% increase in visitations as members are able to easily find resources and event updates.

What I Learned

The high-fidelity prototypes can be distracting when conducting usability tests sometimes. I noticed during the usability tests that participants made more comments about the visual design than the tasks. Although it was great to get feedback on the visual design as well, I’m not sure if I would have gotten more feedback on the usability of the flow and screens.

Done is better than perfect.
I’m kind of a perfectionist, but there’s no such thing as a perfect design. I worked on the project for more time than I allotted for and learned that sometimes I just need to move on when the design was good enough for the time to get the website shipped.

What I Would Improve

I would spend more time talking to the leaders about their goals. There were times when I needed to change a design because I did not clarify with the leaders about what to include or remove.
